Late in the night, on the eve of a historic signing, a cardinal breaks the silence of darkness and lands upon a set of draft documents, a white feather pen held firmly in its claws. The bird’s serious, resolute expression evokes the spirit of the nation’s founders. As the state bird of Virginia, the cardinal serves as messenger, witness, and participant in the unfolding of American history—a history in which many pivotal events and figures emerged from this state.
A single candle cuts through the darkness, offering both guidance and warmth. It symbolizes the future, illuminating the surrounding books while casting light upon the document at the very moment history is about to be written.
The painting is anchored in red, white, and blue—colors that evoke the American Revolution and the struggle for freedom. The cardinal’s vivid red suggests the looming presence of war and the urgency behind the act of signing. The blue tablecloth and books recall the uniforms of American soldiers fighting for independence. A notebook rests nearby, representing the many founders and lawmakers who labored tirelessly into the night to lay the nation’s foundation.
Rather than depicting historical figures directly, the painting uses the bird as a symbolic stand-in, inviting open interpretation. By intentionally avoiding human subjects, the artist creates a unifying image that transcends differing perspectives on history and sidesteps the critique of any single individual.
The composition and lighting evoke the atmosphere of an 18th-century painting, while the loose, expressive brushwork introduces a distinctly modern sensibility.

Once upon a time, the glistening tobacco leaves, bathed in the sunset, bore witness to the glory of southern Virginia, one of the oldest colonies in the United States. As time passed and regulations on tobacco increased, only the small red barn remained to tell the story, existing now only in people’s memories. It whispers of a slower, simpler life, where days were measured by the rising and setting sun and the rhythm of the seasons. The trees are still vibrant, the grass still lush. In spring and fall, the pond mirrors the past of rural Virginia, reflecting how life used to be.
