Description: Late into the night before a historical document was signed, a cardinal breaks through the silence of darkness and lands on the drafts with a white feather pen firmly in its claws. The serious and resolute look of the bird reminds one of the founders of this country.  The Cardinal, a symbol of Virginia, is the messenger, the witness, and participant of the history of this country where many events and key participants emerged from this state. The candle breaks the darkness.  It guides and brings warmth. It represents the future. It outlines the books in the dark while the document on the table is being signed – the moment in which history is to be written.

The painting adopts red, white, and blue as its three major colors which represents the American revolution and strife for freedom. The vivid red on the bird reveals the war that is approaching and the urgency of a signature. The blue tablecloth and books represent the colors of the American soldiers’ uniforms who fight for their independence. The notebook represents the many founders and lawmakers drafting tirelessly late into the night to lay the foundation of this country.

(The painting uses a bird to represent American historical figures instead of images of the figures themselves, leaving interpretation to the imagination of the viewers. The painter intentionally avoids putting a person in the painting.  The bird unites people of different opinions and interpretations of history; avoiding critiques of any one historical figure.)

The subject and lighting of the painting gives a feeling of a 1700s painting while the loose touch of brushwork provides a modern feel.
